Community Engagement

Prosper Waco’s Community Engagement Council (CEC) interacts with community members by educating community members on what the Prosper Waco initiative is, how people can become involved and where the initiative is headed. Monthly, the Prosper Waco staff and council members convene to talk about the council’s activities involving Prosper Waco, feedback they have received from community events and plan for upcoming community engagement activities. Council members work together to host events such as block parties, house meetings and other community activities to engage the Waco community. EVENTS

What’s Up, Waco?: Series One To kick off the 2017 year, the CEC and our director of community engagement, Liz, decided to host community visioning events to hear from community members what results do they want in their community & how we will achieve those goals together. Between March and April of 2017, the first series of What’s Up, Waco kicked off! At these events, community members gathered to discuss what results they want to see in their neighborhoods.

Some community members in the East Waco event identified more youth programs, perception shift about the East Waco community and support of local businesses as results they want to see. For North Waco, some attendees noted they would like to see better access to green space, more walking and bike lanes, and better transportation. Certain South Waco attendees identified mentoring programs in schools and more community activities for children as results they want to see in their neighborhood.

Series Two of What’s Up Waco will start in June! Series Two will focus on how do we reach the results identified TOGETHER. Be on the lookout for more information!

Waco Downtown Farmers Market
On Saturday, June 11, CEC members and staff attended the Waco Downtown Farmers Market to raise awareness about the free parenting tool Vroom and other avenues community members can take to become involved in the Prosper Waco initiative. Many community members signed up for our monthly newsletter and asked about our Mentor Coalition. Our high school student intern joined us to interact with people, too. It was great to see Waco community members to come out and buy healthy, fresh foods and stop by our table!

Community Discussion Events
The CEC held community discussion events in East, South and North Waco on Dec. 1, 8 and 9, respectively. At these meetings, many Waco residents attended and actively participated in conversations about Kindergarten Readiness, Community Health Workers and Employment Opportunities. The discussion was an open forum event, so each person was able to talk to each other, then share with other groups their ideas and suggestions for how implementing certain strategies in the Prosper Waco initiative will work best in the three areas of Waco. Click here to read the Waco Trib article on the event in East Waco.

Block Party
The block party was a success. The CEC made new relationships within the East Waco community, and continued to foster existing relationships. Jeanette Bell, president of North East Riverside Neighborhood Association, along with longtime East Waco residents, learned about employment opportunities available to Wacoans. “I’m so glad we did this. It was great to come to East Waco and inform community members about what job readiness programs are out there. I live in East Waco, so it’s really exciting to see my neighbors and longtime friends excited about the Prosper Waco initiative,” a CEC member said.
