What the Data Tells Us: A Snapshot of Food Access in Our Community

The 2024 Waco Snapshot Report offers a clear look at where we stand as a community, highlighting both areas of progress and the challenges that remain. When it comes to food access, the data underscores the importance of continued collaboration and action.

In McLennan County, about 17% of residents have inconsistent access to healthy food. In some areas of Waco, that number climbs to more than 30%. Among children, the need is even more urgent, with more than 16,000 children experiencing food insecurity — the highest level recorded since at least 2017.

At the same time, about 16% of Waco families rely on SNAP benefits, a rate significantly higher than peer cities and the state average. These numbers reflect both the need in our community and the importance of strengthening systems that support families.

The Snapshot Report provides local decision-makers with critical data to better understand community needs and track progress across education, health and financial security. It serves as a tool to guide action, inform partnerships and measure the impact of ongoing efforts.

Through data-driven, action-oriented collaboration across education, healthcare, local businesses, nonprofits and government, we can continue to create opportunities that empower individuals, improve outcomes and strengthen our community.
